I recently changed my iPhone and upgraded to a new one. While trying to backup all data from my old iPhone, I was surprised by the complexity and time consumed during what I thought a simple task: to transfer iPhone contacts to my computer.
It turns out that I needed to use iTunes and sync my old iPhone so that my contacts transfer to my Windows Contacts. Scared of iTunes sync and the notorious iTunes prompt informing me about deletion of songs on my iPhone, I looked online in search for other, simpler solutions to move my iPhone contacts to my computer.
Another surprise followed; this time, pleasant. I found a tool which helped me transfer iPhone contacts directly to my PC without the need for iTunes.

Here are the detailed steps showing how I transferred all iPhone contacts to PC:
1. Ran the contacts program and connected my iPhone to my computer. My contacts instantly showed up
2. Next, I clicked on the “Export selected” button and chose the folder on my computer where to save the iPhone contacts
3. Then, I selected "iOS" from the export-file-types options
4. My iPhone contacts transferred successfully to my computer
The time it took me to transfer iPhone contacts to PC using the above method took less than 3 minutes. iTunes was not required.
I would use something like iphone data recovery, a free beta third-party program to transfer iPhone contacts to computer:

2. Then either click on the recoverbutton and navigate to the location on your PC where you wish the contacts exported or drag and drop a selection of your iphone contacts to say, your desktop
Your iphone contacts will be transferred as individual vCard files to the location specified on your computer
I agree that backing-up with iTunes would be the most direct way there exists to transfer contacts from iPhone to your computer if iTunes. The downturn is that iTunes is restless in its aim to consistently try and wipe clean any iDevice it doesn't like.
